Beefeater Gin (~$18) contains nine different botanicals: juniper, angelica root, angelica seeds, coriander seeds, liquorice, almonds, orris root, seville oranges, and lemon peel. The botanicals are steeped over the weekend, for a 24-hour period, prior to distilling the gin, then the gin is slowly heated such that the infused vapors resettle as a flavored liquid.
It is a 47% alcohol product (94 proof) in the US and New Zealand, 37.1% alcohol in Australia, and a 40% alcohol product (80 proof) elsewhere in the world (including the UK). This gin is distilled from “100% grain spirit”. The bottle bears an image of a Yeoman Warder. The manufacturer has been in business since 1820 and is located in Kennington, London. 1)
In 1863 James Burrough purchased the Chelsea distillery in London from the Taylor Family for £400. At the Chelsea distillery he would produce fruit gins and liqueurs. In 1876, he founded the Beefeater gin brand, named after the Tower of London's guards who are known as “Beefeaters.” In 1963, Beefeater accounted for three out of every four bottles of gin exported to the United States.
In 2005, Pernod Ricard purchased Beefeater and would reinvigorate the brand as a worldwide brand recognized on a global scale and one of the only London Dry gins still located in London, England.
