Tanqueray is a brand of British gin which is marketed worldwide, best known for their London Dry Gin (~$40). The brand is owned by Diageo Plc. and is sold in a variety of proofs including: 47.3% ABV, 42.1% ABV and 40% ABV depending on where the product is sold.
In 1830, Charles Tanqueray established the distillery in the Bloomsbury district of Tingrith in Bedfordshire. When Charles died in 1868, the company passed into the hands of his heir, Charles Waugh Tanqueray. An air raid in 1941, during World War II, left the distillery in shambles; only one still survived the attack. This still, known as “Old Tom,” now resides in Cameronbridge, Scotland and continues to be used today.
The gin is primarily produced in Scotland and exported to its major market, the US. It is a London Dry Gin, so called because of the distillation process, not the origin of the product.
