Gosling's Rum

Gosling's has three brands of rum: Black Seal (~$15), Gold (~$15) and Old Rum ($70). Gosling's Black Seal Rum is their flagship product, offering an 80-Proof Bermuda Black rum, which is the foundation behind the Dark 'N' Stormy drink recipe.

It is also possible to find a 140-Proof and 151-Proof Black Seal Rum. An aged Black Seal Rum is available and is branded as Gosling's Family Reserve or “Old Rum.”

History

Gosling's Rum Family The history of Black Seal Rum® and the Gosling family began long ago. In the spring of 1806, James Gosling, the oldest son of William Gosling, wine and spirits merchant, set out from England on the ship, Mercury, with £10,000 of merchandise, bound for America.

After ninety-one desperate days on a becalmed sea, their charter ran out, and they pulled in at the nearest port, St. George’s, Bermuda. Rather than pressing on for America, James opened a shop on the King’s Parade, St. George’s in December 1806.

Over the years, Black Seal has become synonymous with Bermuda. It is the essential additive to Bermuda fish chowder, adds the island touch to Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the tempest in Bermuda’s favorite cocktail – the Dark ‘n Stormy®.

A family business for over two centuries, Gosling’s is today the only company that blends and bottles in Bermuda, and is the largest exporter of a Bermuda-made product.

Awards

In 2005, Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum and Black Seal Rum won awards at the recent San Francisco Spirits Competition the same year they rated Gosling's Black Seal 140-Proof a gold award.

In 2003, A Platinum Award in the Overproof Category and three GOLD Awards, one of which was in the Premium Category, were presented to Gosling's at the 2003 International Rum Festival in which over 165 rums were displayed, tasted and judged.

Gosling's Black Seal Rum was awarded the Platinum Medal at the World Spirits Championships in 2003 scoring 96 points. Judges noted it as, “deep, assertive and highly flavored. Very fragrant with herbal sharpness. At the finish there is a softness and elegance. A most complex, unusual spirit.”

Gold awards in 2001 and 2002 at the International Rum Festival.
